Quote on writing

Today I’m posting my first “quote” blog. This little feature appeared because my journalism studies are low-key today. Anyway, on with the quote:
I try to leave out the parts that people skip. ~Elmore Leonard

‘New’ Web class disappoints

This semester my college’s Writing for the Information Age class experienced what I can see as the most awful process of reshuffling and disorganization I’ve witnessed in any college course.
The semester approaches the halfway point and we’re still without a syllabus — and any lack of comprehension therein.
I have no idea what I’m supposed to [...]

The Commuter plans “Green Package”

This semester our Web journalism class is generating specific content. We’re trying to keep a separate presence online so The Commuter doesn’t just shovel print stories to the Web.
To reach these goals we’re going to address some points about the “green” trend and how it affects life on campus. Story ideas so far:

NCC switches to [...]

What do you want out of online news?

As my last posts state: The Commuter has its own Facebook page. Now I realize the uptime isn’t even a week on this thing, but I’ve tried promoting it within the journalism department and the college network. On top of that we’ll be running a house ad in the next print issue of the paper.
All [...]

New Nokia gear addresses N95 concerns

As any “mojo” at Reuters will tell you: the Nokia N95 kit lets one reporter do several things quickly, and well.
Video, audio, still photographs, writing, Web publishing … can this thing do anything else (like make phone calls)?
Gear geeks Technology enthusiasts like myself enjoy seeing products with good features — that way I don’t have [...]

Online journalism wins through short ‘chunky’ text

Today I’m going to illustrate a point made on Pat Bradshaw’s Online Journalism Blog. I’ve found several of these tips useful but as mentioned in his first post about brevity, shoveled content tends to fit better in columns on a page than in a frame on a Web site.
As anyone reading this blog knows I’m [...]

The Commuter moves into Facebook and publishes Web content

The Commuter recently added a Facebook page. We’ll be adding more admins and some standard content to the page. Hopefully the discussion board post I made on the Northampton network helps with traffic.  We’ll also advertise in our next print issue and run a small brief on the site.
Speaking of the site, our Feb. issue [...]

WGA strike over, journalism took a hit

As the writers strike ends Jack Bauer fans can start rejoicing along with Academy Awards junkies (maybe we can actually have some real jokes at an awards show!).
Now that Americans can get back to seeing if Meredith and whats-his-name on Grey’s Anatomy get back together the media can start picking through the new WGA contract [...]

Testing out Google

Apparently Google Documents is becoming more impressive than it already is. Forms will add a new way for connectivity and reader responses.
This new feature reinforces my idea that Google will eventually take over the Internet. All they really need to do is set up an ISP and a Web browser. That might put a stop [...]

Tea bag leaves office steamed

Today in my Writing for the Information Age class (Web Journalism) we did another exercise where we take a story in print and re-write it for the Web. The following is compiled from some staff reports at The Express-Times.
A sugar-packet sized bag containing a brown substance brewed suspicion that lead to an office building [...]
